JOURNEY: EVOLUTION OF AN IDEA

FIRST IDEA
For my first idea I was thinking of making an opening for a spy/action hybrid movie. This film would be shot in multiple locations with the setting remaining unknown with no landmarks the viewers can use to denote the exact location. This movie will play on "the drop" trope really heavily.

The main premise is the whole opening focuses on different spies passing a case which contains very sensitive information, to each other in very discrete or creative ways. However the last transfer is interrupted by the films villain as when the spy goes to the drop location in the middle of the forest where the villain sneaks up on him and attacks him by surprise, a grappling scene ensues ending in the villain choking out the spy and stealing the information, cutting away to a close up of a phone in a mans office who is being informed of the incident.

This opening relies pretty heavily on Bartezes theory of narrative enigma, which would be achieved with the focus shifting rapidly from character to character and then tricking the viewer into thinking the protagonist has been revealed but killing him shortly after. It would also be heavily inspired by the Bond or Bourne films.

Notes:

baby driver

has very long takes and it needs to be very skilful, example of skilful long take in touch of evil, haloween 1978, birdman. Mix it up to introduce disruption. could combine it with the drop concept.

IDEA 2:

21/10/20

I'm not sure what I want, maybe a slasher horror film, though that is not the sort of film I tend to watch so maybe a comedy film, though that can be sometimes very dry.

29/10/20

I am thinking about making a heist film, I am considering replicating the film "Oceans 11", as I like its opening scene, and I believe I could replicate it to a good extent.

30/10/20

I think we are going to follow the heist film genre, but we might pick the film "Baby Driver", as it is a more modern (2017, compared to 2001), and more achievable film to replicate, and it is a Working Title production, which links well with our CSPs.

We are currently debating between two scenes of the film, both of which are in the opening of the movie, but not necessarily in the first two minutes.

IDEA 1:

Idea 1 is the first scene of the movie, it has the main character in the car (we can tell he is the main character because when all the other characters leave, the camera is following him), and all the other characters get their own 3 second close up, then they leave the car, go to the back of the car, open the trunk between the three of them, take a bag each, and enter the bank with masks on. Then the main character is shown dancing to the song.

Pros:

  • Has a good amount of shot variety
  • Is the real opening to the film, so it has narrative enigma
  • Is much easier to replicate
  • Very little to no talking required

 Cons:

  • tricky to record inside a car
  • larger cast needed
  • props needed
  • bank to enter needed (though this can be surpassed by having a short clip showing that what is being robbed is actually a heavily guarded house, this could be done, by simply following a red line of string from one picture to the next showing the plan, and the prize using a "crazy wall")

IDEA 2:

Idea 2 is a scene later in the movie, it has the main character in walking through the streets listening to music, on his way to get coffee, and is interacting with everyone who he passes.

 Pros:

  • a small cast works
  • less props needed
  •  very little to no talking required

Cons:

  • All one shot, or made to seem like that
  • not the real opening
  • hard to replicate

4/11/20

We decided on the first idea.

We were considering just starting with a "crazy wall" which showed a house that has a vault inside it, and some basic information about the thieves, with (possibly) a mugshot of each, except for the main character, where there is just a picture, connoting he has never been caught, so we were hoping to have a vault, only for a few seconds, but to show what they are robbing, and then have the scene with the music in the car, as you hear, shooting, and "were past the guards", and "were in" from some communications device. That is one idea we have.

another option is having the car scene where its simply in a parking lot, and the criminals leave the car (and do as they do in the film), and go out of frame, but we only see the main character dancing, but no shot of the criminals entering the building, then we hear gunshots, and the whole song, and then they come out and back into the car, like the film.

Locations:

This building is the one that the criminals will come close to entering:

here it is on a map:

...

 ...
the red circle indicates the building they are going to walk to, the green one indicates where the car will be parked (there seems to be something there, but that is because this is an old picture, normally, that is a fairly empty parking lot)

Script:

Car is parked

  • the car is parked outside a building
  • in the car there is Baby in the front seat, Griff in the one next to him, Buddy behind him, and Darling behind Griff

ipod/phone is shown, play is pressed, music starts

  • ECU or BCU on hands holding ipod/phone
  • as soon as play is pressed, the song starts playing both in diagnostically and non-diagetically

close up of Baby from Griff's seat

  • he looks up from his ipod/phone

close op of Griff from Baby

  • he is chewing something

close op of Buddy from Griff

close op of Darling from Griff

  • she gives a smirk

everyone exits the car at the same time

everyone walks to the back and opens the trunk
  • Griff on the left, Darling in the middle, Buddy on the right
  • they all take out their bags at the same time
they all close the trunk
  • they all leave together in a line
once they are gone, Baby starts dancing
  •  he dances with the music
when they are coming back, he puts the car into reverse
  • they get in
  • Griff points forwards

Production schedule:

N/A waiting on responses from the cast, probably will be a weekend

6/11/20

 Sound Affects:

What we need to record:
  • any words being said over a communications device, that would be played over the main song, such as:
    •  "Were in"
    • "The guard is down"
    • "On our way out"
  • possibly screaming
  • police scanner  saying they are being robbed

What we will get off the internet (because of difficulty of recording them):
  • gun sounds
    • shot gun being fired
    • machine gun being fired
  • possibly screaming
  • car tires screeching

What has to be bought, or loaned:

 Working Title: The Driver

Crazy wall:

focus on scenes by zooming into them, then cross-fading into the scene playing, then moving to another

there will be a narration\there will be different scenes

4 scenes

scene 1:

A bag which is signified to contain weapons and money is put on a bench and then someone sits next to them and the picks it up and walks away with no eye contact between the two people. The bench will be in the centre of a park, the transaction will only take a few seconds (approx. 10s)

scene 2:

steal or purchase car, this can be done by simply parking the car on the road and then faking that it is broken into. this will also take only a few seconds (approx. 10s as well)

 scene 3:

record someone who is connoted and signified to be working at the bank, (this could be done by having a badge) by simply walking into them, and slowing down time slightly, and then saying sorry and walking away, and then showing the card to the camera (this will also take only a few seconds, approx. 10s)

scene 4:

the part of the film we had previously planned

29/11/20

for the actual peoples names we will pick 3 appropriate film, and take crew names from those, with cast, also can include existing actors

-------------------------- HERE SECOND IDEA --------------------------

The plan changed to a more simple and achieve-able plan of recording in a house and then in a church.

---------------------------- HERE THIRD IDEA ---------------------------

Here it is an huge improvement on the older one, with many minor ideas improved upon, and a change in cast. there is also a lot more controlled directing occurring here. this is one of the edits after the re-recording we did.
